This mystery, set in Sicily, is well known in Italy as well as the rest of the world. It was recommended on a blog Ellen recommended called READ ALL DAY. It's a quick read, immerses you in the politics and culture of Sicily. In this novel, Inspector Salvo Montalbano must solve the death of a big shot in town, found murdered in the Pasture, the disreputable part of town visited mostly by prostitutes and their johns. Salvo must walk a careful line, making sure not to upset some of the powerful players in Vigata. We find the usual characters, politicians, assistant inspectors, and the intelligence and intuition of Salvo who, despite having no evidence, solves the crime to his satisfaction. The plot is too complicated to explain. But we are taken in by Salvo, the fact that his love, Livia, lives in Milan, a plane ride away. We like his friends, his love of food, the fact that he's well liked by his peers and his humanity. He is not above overlooking something, a peccadillo, if it's not necessary to solving a crime. I will read more of his works.
