Finally, Some Blue Skies And Sunshine

The First Tundra Swans Of December

8:26

I woke at 6:20 to darkness, then overcast skies, then finally, as I returned from kayaking, a blue sky and some sun.  What a difference it makes in my attitude towards the day.  It was chilly out on the lake but the light wind made it bearable as long as I had on four layers and a life jacket.

Yesterday was Thanksgiving Dinner Day Two.  Because we ended up having Thanksgiving last minute at our friends' house, we had a turkey ready to freeze or cook.  So we decided that yesterday, Monday, would be a good day to have a turkey dinner.    We decided to get a good walk in before the prepping and drove off to Long Point around 11:30 and walked for over an hour, braving the wind as we walked out to Long Point.  It was a good walk, worth the effort.

When we returned home, Evie started prepping for the dinner.  Easy and quick, right. Just throw the bird in the oven and dinner is ready.  Not so.  The bird had to be dry brined the night before, a rub made for the bird.  Also, we can't just have turkey; we need all the sides, so cornbread had to baked, sausage fried, for the stuffing.  Neck and wings had to be cooked for the gravy.  And potatoes had to be peeled, boiled, and mashed just before dinner.

Tearing Down A Lake Wall

So that was our, or rather Evie's afternoon in a nutshell.  Mine was the usual, no kayaking, but blogging, breakfast, helping in the kitchen with the dishes, a lunch of leftovers from Saturday night's dinner, reading, and a nap. We were able to enjoy some wine time as the bird came out and the stuffing went into the oven for forty-five minutes.

Dinner was worth the effort although we now know why Thanksgiving dinners happen once a year. It takes a lot of time and effort.  We loved it, however, and I went back for seconds on everything, the turkey, potatoes, stuffing, and gravy and look forward to a blue plate dinner tonight, warmed up turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy, and maybe a vegetable.  We watched a Colbert, then finally started the series, The Undoing, on HBO which we liked and cannot wait to continue with it tonight.
