A Curtain Of Fog

It's 7:40 and I have already been up for two hours, waiting for the fog to dissipate so I can kayak.  I have listened to two podcasts on books and am now listening to Joe the Gardener discuss 'why mulch matters,' a definitive guide to why we should mulch.  It's 8:00 as I finished writing this blog.  Evie's still sleeping and the lake is still fog-bound although I am going to get out on the lake, sticking close to the shoreline until the fog lifts.

It's 9:15 and what a morning.  What could be better than kayaking as the fog lifts, the sun comes out and listening to Barry White's Greatest Hits, first introduced to us in the 1970s by my Besikitas teammate Battal, may he rest in peace.

Yesterday was a wet one, as we ended up with a couple inches of rain during a twenty-four hour period, flooding yards and flower beds as well as mud into the lake.  I paddled early, in the rain, which I enjoyed since it had not rained in weeks, just an occasional drizzle.  We had plans for the day, or rather Evie did, First, however, we drove to Walmart, to pick up more potting mix, a few more dahlias, and some fruit, strawberries, and mangos, for our smoothies in the morning.  We were there by 9:45 and realized that if we go shopping early, the stores are not crowded.  Dah!  There were no lines at checkout and the aisles were practically empty and everyone was wearing a mask.

We were home earlier than usual, so we relaxed some before Evie began her big project for the day, starting 56 dahlias in yogurt tubs.  It's a good thing I have yogurt every morning for breakfast and save the plastic tubs.  She set up on our front porch, out of the rain and with a view of the lake.  I helped by putting the mulch in baskets for easy access and she found a comfortable chair and began the onerous process.  She worked on and off much of the afternoon and by the time she was done, it started to rain once again, watering the dahlias some before we brought them back on the porch.

Meanwhile, I had my lunch, ramen, and the rest of the sub from Wegmans and finished Season Two of Fauda.  I then cleaned up the kitchen, asked Evie if she needed help (No) then settled on the couch to ready my Virgil Flowers and nap, the good life.  When I woke, I broke a rule and watched another episode of Fauda in the afternoon because it was raining outside.

5:45 pm
As the sky darkened, we were both ready for a glass of wine by 5:00, especially Evie, who was happy to have all the dahlias started. They probably will not go into the ground until Memorial Day, hoping that there will not be another frost.  Dinner was a recipe from our daughter Beth, chicken breasts with a paste of green onions and ginger under the skin.  It's then baked and sliced when we were ready to eat.  We had mashed potatoes and a salad, a great dinner and the chicken is something we will make again. We watched a Colbert, an episode from Apple TV's series Home, then Dead To Me and Cheers.  Another eclectic night of viewing to end our day.
