56º And Drizzle

5:49
View From Our Porch At 8:50
It's 8:10, Evie's still sleeping and I am sitting on our front porch for the first time in 2020.  I paddled in the drizzle for forty-five minutes, on a gray lake and sky,  I kayaked on my usual route, along with Victoria to Wells Bay, passing by the reeds where I usually kind find some waterfowl.  Fortunately, on my paddle back to Woodlawn, a heron swooped down on our neighbors' docks, so that I was able to get a couple of good photographs, making the paddle in drizzle worthwhile.

Kayak Morning
Good Morning Great Blue Heron
Yesterday started out like Saturday, a great sunrise, blue skies, a calm lake, perfect for my morning kayak.  By the time I returned, it was starting to cloud up and the rest of the day was a classic Chautauqua gray, with a 10 mph wind.  What to do on a Sunday, a day of rest?

Well, we 'cultivated our garden' as Voltaire's Candide suggested, 'avoiding speculation.'  This quotation always appealed to me but it's only lately that it really took hold.  With our staying home, the garden has been a godsend to both of us, giving us something to do each day and by the end of the day, we see great progress, as the weeds disappear, the plants begin to grow, green for now, soon, however, they will flower.  I have to admit to not being as obsessed with the garden as Evie but I am getting there, starting to enjoy the work more and more.  So that's what we did most of Sunday morning and afternoon, weeding, filling in areas with topsoil, and moving plants and ground cover to satisfy Evie's plan.  We did take time out around 12:30 for our traditional Sunday big breakfast and watched CBS Sunday Morning although we paused before its end because Evie wanted to get back out and work.  I was ready, however. to take it easy for a bit, reading some and napping but I was soon back out helping in the garden.  Interestingly, both of my sisters, Linda and Ellen, are avid gardeners and both have amazing looking yards, filled with annuals, perennials, bushes, and flowering trees.

Around 5:30, we settled down in our living room, with a Manhattan, having skipped yesterday because it was too nice out to come inside.  We like to have our mannies on gray days and Sunday was perfect for that.  We had Trader Joe's cheddar cheese, listened to another eclectic list by Evie until it was time for dinner, pizza from Coppola's in Bemus Point, a salad, and a Pepsi.  I was happy, having burgers one night, pizza the next, two of my all-time favorite meals.  We watched the usual line up, a couple episodes of Dead To Me and Cheers before going up to read and fall asleep, happy from our busy day.
