8:30 |
It's after 8:00 and I cannot see past our dock because of the fog. It's been this way since I got up at 6:20. It's a cold 58º and will probably get up to 80º later in the day. It looks like a warm and sunny weekend, a typical Indian summer weekend. It's 8:45 and I am still sitting in my living room, finishing up the blog, still waiting for the fog dissipate so I can get in a morning paddle. It may be awhile. Well, I was out for an hour and as I paddled, the fog lifted. I paddled along Magnolia, to Whitney Bay and back, and caught a heron feeding, a few ducks washing themselves.

Washing Up |
Yesterday was a busy day, mostly for Evie because we were having our neighbors, Ken and Majorie, and another friend, Charlie, over for dinner so the morning was taken up with making a few dishes. By 9:30, the peach upside down cake was done. It was then time to try a recipe we both have wanted to try called Milk Bread which we saw on the NYTimes. It's too complicated to explain fully but it involves boiling flour and water to start, with honey and cream and flour added later, lots of yeast, a few rises, and voila, we had rolls as well as a loaf of bread. We were also having a main course of chicken with artichokes and mushrooms, so Evie seared the chicken and I washed the mushrooms, so that was ready to pop in the oven later in the day. Most of dinner, then, was ready so Evie could enjoy the sunshine the rest of the afternoon, sort of.
I began the day with a paddle through the fog, what is fast becoming a morning ritual, and when Evie said she no longer needed my help in the kitchen, I decided to get a bike ride in and drove over to Bemus and took an hour ride through Bemus Point and Long Point State Park, my favorite ride because it's mostly flat. It was fun to get back on my bike and I love my new cheap bike rack, easy to attach and lightweight. For lunch, I had leftover pizza and soup, watched some TV, then did some reading before napping.

Changing Trees |
Around 3:00, I joined Evie on the dock for an hour before we both decided to go in because of the wind. We then finished up prepping for our guests. Evie made an appetizer we have always loved called Asian shrimp cocktail, basically, shrimp marinated in mayo, lemon and red onions.

Another Good Evening |
Our friends arrived at 6:00 and we sat out on our porch, enjoying a glass of wine and appetizers until 7:00 when the chicken, artichokes, and mushrooms were ready. Charlie, one of our friends, is a musician so we had fun finding some of the Jazz groups he liked, one of which we knew, the Ramsey Lewis Trio. All five of us were familiar with the group and I had seen them back in 1960 at Leo's Casino in Cleveland. All of us are film buffs, too, so we had fun talking about films we have seen or want to see in the future. We ended the evening with peach upside down cake, topped with whipped cream, a hit of course. By 9:45, all three were walking home and Evie and I were back at the kitchen sink, washing and drying the dishes. It's nice to wake up to a clean kitchen. It was another busy but fun day. It's nice to have neighbors who are also good friends.
