A Sunday Of Hiking, Leaf Raking, Kayaking, Chicken And Biscuits

Super Moon
7:14
Another clear, crispy morning here at the lake, as the sky lightens from rose to orange, to light blue. It's 32º, with frost on my car windows, as the days get shorter.  We have a couple more days like this until rain arrives late Wednesday or Thursday and the first snow the the year has been predicted for the weekend.  We will miss it, however, because we will be in Kansas City.

Yesterday was another fine day, still shocking for this time of the year.  I will not complain. And though we were a bit lazy, at sixes and sevens, the clear skies and sun forced us to don our walking shoes and drive of to the Chautauqua Institution for our Sunday walk or hike as I like to call it...sounds more manly/womanly.  The fall colors have disappeared for the most part, only a few tress still have their leaves yet the mums on the Smith Library porch remain in full bloom.  As always, it was good to get in a walk on a crispy deep fall morning.  We ran into Ron and Linda, also out for a morning constitutional.  We were back by noon and were determined to get something done before a big breakfast.

So we emptied the back porch of furniture and we both washed down the siding, swept and vacuumed the floor, getting it ready for the long winter to come.  And we got out our porch curtain and hung it, creating a cosy mud room for the winter.  Finally, we hung our old/new pictures we bought at an antique store near Persia. New York on our porch wall.  So far, they look fine.  Once all this was done, Evie went in to prepare our breakfast and I raked more leaves, mulched them and put them around our hydrangea and other trees and bushes to protect them from the winter.  Breakfast was the usual, my favorite meal of the week (until last night's chicken and biscuits) and we watched a subdued CBS Sunday Morning, not too much about the week's election, thank goodness.  By the time we were finished, we had lost some of our mojo and put off until today a few things we had on our to do list.

I then watched some football as Evie started prepping the chicken and vegetables.  We then spent a good part of the afternoon listening to music, watching football, reading and waiting for our dinner.
4:59
We were both interested in the Super Moon which will appear tonight.  It was supposed to rise around 4:55 and because the lake was like glass, we decided to do some kayaking late afternoon.

Phoning It In

SUPER
Moon Over Bemus Bay
Midway across the lake, Evie's phone rang; it was her sister Elaine, who lives in Chicago,  so while I kayaked and took photos of the moon rising over Bemus Bay, Evie floated in the middle of the lake talking with Elaine until it got too dark to sit out there and I paddled by and said it was time to hang up and paddle home.  Because the sun had set behind our house, paddling home was like paddling into darkness, as neither our home nor yard was visible, a scary way to kayak home.  Fortunately, as we got closer, it became visible.
Paddling In To The Dark Of Home
Moonlighting
We stored our kayaks in twilight and then went inside to a warm house when it was time for Evie to make the biscuits.  Evie used the NYTimes recipe where you grate frozen butter, refrigerate it, then work it into the dough of flour and buttermilk, so there are still chunks of butter. Once they were rolled and cut, she placed them on top of the chicken, baked them in our new oven, and viola, we had some of the best chicken and biscuits I have ever had.

Chicken And Biscuits Arising

YUM
We watched the end of the Steeler/Cowboys game, waiting to watch 60 Minutes without commercials.  The President Elect sounded surprisingly sane and humbled, quite a contrast from hate mongering and rabble rousing of the past year and a half.  Hope Springs Eternal.  We then watched a good part of SNL and loved Kate McKinnon, singing Hallelujah as Hillary Clinton, a perfect way to start the show.  It reminded me of the first SNL show after 9/11 as it had that I Will Survive tone.
