BOTH---Red's Best Pancake House, Sherman, NY And The Viking Club, Maple Springs, NY

7:17
Cairn Still Standing
We are both up and the sun has risen, patches of pink in an otherwise gray sky.  One lone fisherman on the lake, it's 30º and may get up to 50º later in the day.  Maybe it will be warm enough for the two inch thick ice on our walk will melt so we can get in and out of the house without literally crawling to avoid a fall.  We don't want to use salt but perhaps we should.

Yesterday was colder than expected, snow lakes occasionally during the day but no accumulation. We had our coffee, listened to NPR, waiting for 11:00 to arrive, so we could drive the 13 miles to Red's Best Pancake House, south of Sherman on Sherman/Clymer Road.  It was a nice ride there, through vast white fields of untouched snow, gray clouds in the background.

Red's Shack And The Mud
Red's is not the most picturesque destination, a log cabin surrounded by parked cars,  a muddy parking lot, and various farm machinery.  But once inside the cabin, it's cozy and warm, filled with people enjoying their pancakes and sausage.  Lots of families, a seemingly endless stream of people, over 300 that morning according to the cashier, it's a great way to spend a morning.  I ate my four pancakes, plus one, and that was more than enough, with coffee, orange juice, and applesauce.  We had the same waitress we have always had until we realized she was a twin; her sister waited on us last time.  Ten or fifteen tables surround a sitting area with couches, looking at a blazing fire.  We hated to leave it's warmth for the mud filled lot, the gray cold farmlands of Sherman's Amish community.

We spent the afternoon as we usually do, no worry about dinner because we were going to the St. Patrick's Day Bash at at the Viking Club at 5:00, so Evie was happy.  We watched some TV, read, Evie wrote some notes, and watched some basketball.  I got bored mid afternoon and put together my no knead artisan bread, with flax, quinoa, oats, and whole wheat flour.  I will bake it when I get home from yoga this afternoon.  We left for the Viking Club at 5:30, Evie anxious to get there of course.  If there was a crowd, they must have left before we got there because we found a seat at the bar, though other tables were also filled.

Dawn and Doug
Our friends, Dawn and Doug were there, seem to always be there as well some other regulars we recognized.  We had a couple of beers, ordered a large and small corn beef and cabbage, both really good, and struck up a conversation with a guy to Evie's left, a retired prison guard, who kept apologizing for 'talking too much.'  He left us his name, Doug Christiansen and his phone number in case we needed help with getting a new car.  We also struck up a conversation with the weekend bartender, Jeff Newman, who was talking about his 280 pound son and Evie thought he said he was a sixth grader.  That got lots of laughs from the crowd.

We were home around 8:00 and watched Better Call Saul, episode # 5, the first one where we thought this show might actually be good.  And we watched another Good Wife, a show that both of us think has lost its appeal, but we watch it anyways.  I am almost finished with LEAVING BERLIN, probably the 12th book I have read in the last couple of years set in Berlin in the 1940's.
