Top Of The Mornng

7:42
Up late, 7:15, which felt good, the sun hidden behind clouds at first, the word a drab morning came to mind. It's 55º and it sounds like the weather changes today, the temperatures dropping, rain coming in tonight. After today's high in the 70's, the highs drop for the next ten days into the 50's, a harbinger of the weather to come.  Hard to believe summer's over, fall in in full bloom, leaves colorful and falling, a chill coming.

Yesterday seemed like the end of summer, warm and sunny, but the trees have already started to color, covering the lawn, the first of many such effects.  I was out by 8:00, for breakfast with the guys, five of us for once, one of two large groups of men that meet on Thursday morning.  Some have just returned from trips like me, others will  be heading out in the next week like us.  It's fun to get together for an hour, to catch up on things both in the area and the Chautauqua Institution.  When we walked out, fire engines were charging by, as a contractor hit a gas line in Bemus Point, resulting in a fire. We could easily see the flames from the front of the Bemus Point Inn.  I guess a couple hundred people lost power for the day and the Seezurh House was not serving dinner, just beer.
A Final Gathering
We both enjoyed a leisurely morning, happy to be back at the lake, watching the sunrise, the changing sky scape, the lake shimmering as the sun rose. Evie got into action around 10:00, replacing our old dishes and silverware with the new, trying to figure out what to do with the old sets.  Like many people our age, we still have our china and silverware from our wedding, as well as a couple of other sets from the past thirty or forty years.  What to do with them is the question because they are still useful...pack them up and put them in the attic until we can find someone who might make use of them, I guess.  We cannot quite throw anything out.  So the morning was spent with both of us putting the house back in order, the goal being to get outside on the dock and enjoy the sun before the weather changes.  So Evie was on the dock by 12:30, and I had lunch, watched Ray Donovan, then read before taking  a quick nap.  Around 3:00, I drove to Mayville, stopped at Tops to fix up a few necessities and got a flu shot at Mayville Health.  When I got home, Evie was off the dock, cutting the lawn, so I decided to work in the yard as well, picking up twigs, clearing some of the dock, pruning dead branches, things like that, as our yard slowly returned to its normal pristine, leaf free look. Around 5:30, the Leonards, Pat Jones and Evie and I, sat outside in chairs, having a glass of wine or beer, enjoying the waning afternoon.  We may not be able to do this again as both are leaving for the winter in the next week.
The Friendly Duck With Crooked Bill
For dinner, we had leftover moussaka, still tasty, and a salad, and caught up on a few Stewart and Colbert episodes, and finished Masters of Sex, a series we have liked on and off over the past few months.  The acting is superb, the plot has its ups and downs, as we are either bored or pulled in, depending on the week.  We went up to read about 10:30, as Elvis Cole and Joe Pike get closer and closer to the bad guys, and I increasingly have the feeling that I have read this book before! Yuk.
