Fog Bound Saturday Morning

7:38
The Audubon Boardwalk
A leisurely Saturday in store for us, sort of , as we make sure we have everything in order for our getaway on Monday, to Kansas City via car, Scottsdale via plane.  I can just make out the  trees in the front yard the fog is so heavy; it's twenty eight outside but warming to the high forties later in the day, another great day to be outside.

Because yesterday was such a bright, sunny and chilly day, we wanted to go for a long walk so we decided to walk the Audubon Center & Sanctuary. Before we left, however, Evie made some cut out cookies to take with us on our trip to Marlena"s.  In fact, we will arrive on Tuesday and Marlena and friends will decorate them that afternoon.  Anyways, the Audubon Center is  a thirty minute drive from our house, a couple of hundred acres including a large pond.  We have walked it many times, at different times of the year, so we were familiar with it.  There were a few cars in the lot but did not see anyone on our walk.  The leaves have mostly fallen, so we walked among vertical straw like tree trunks, accented by many pines in the early parts of the walk.  The last half is along the pond, without the benefit of any trees, so it was open, warm enough to want to take off our jackets.  As usual, we saw no wild life, heard no birds, mostly the wind on the pine trees.  The walk was supposed to take an hour and a half to two hours, depending on your pace.  It took us about fifty minutes, as we tried to power walk it to get some benefit from it.  It was  wonderful to be alone in the woods, to feel the cold air, hear the leaves crunching, see the contrast between the heavy green of the pines and the sky.  We should have walked it again but decided to go for lunch in Frewsburg, about ten minutes away.  I had heard about The Corner Coffee House and Bistro and wanted to try it.  It's hard to find, no obvious sign, but we finally parked and walked to it, next to an antique store.  The inside is not much, a few plastic booths and tables and chairs, with the open kitchen at the back.  The waitress was great, however, and the menu was interesting.  We decided to share a bowl of chicken vegetable soup and a sandwich.  Both were made from scratch and quite tasty.  The sandwich had chicken, cranberry mayonaise, Canadian bacon and cheese, on sour dough bread.  The soup came in a mammouth bowl, with fresh noodles.  When we left, we talked with the chef and he told us about his restaurant, the food all made from organic and local ingredients. In fact, he told us how he freeezes his tomotatoes; he buys bushes of organic tomatoes from Abers Acres Farm, a few miles away, dips them for twenty seconds in boiling water, pulls them out, easily takes off the skin, lets them cool, then puts them in bags and freezes them.  And he has fresh tomatoes all year.  The dinner menu has five items, along with specials ranging from salmon, to pork chops, to a vegetarian stir fry, to steak au poivre.  We liked both him and the waitress enough to come back some evening.  They usually have music on Friday or Saturday, last night it was Jazz, tonight  Irish Music.  It's cash only but you can bring your own wine or beer.

We then walked around the antique store a bit, were put off by the unfriendliness of the owner, stepped out side and saw people looking at our Accord.  The left rear had been hit and standing in the parking lot was an elderly woman, most likely in her eighties or early nineties.  She was shaken, apologetic and sweet, guilty about the accident.  We helped her call her insurance company; Evie talked with the agents, making sure everything was in order for both us and the driver.  It took about thirty minutes.  She was appreciative for our helping her out, and we made sure she wast calm enough to drive home before we drove on.  We will put off getting the car fixed until December when we return from our trip West.  An eventful trip to the Audubon but it could have been worst.

We picked up a chicken from Sam's Club for dinner, cheap and good, and Evie made a Burro Russo sauce to put over pasta, and brownies,  a great combination.  We watched three episodes of Parenthood, read and went to bed.
